The Order to Choose Remodeling Materials
Choose items that control dimensions and rough work before choosing paint or hardware.
Lock the large pieces
Appliances, tubs, shower systems, cabinetry, and windows affect framing, plumbing, or electrical locations. Their specifications matter early.
Coordinate finishes
Floor thickness, tile layout, counter edges, and trim profiles meet at transitions. Review samples together under the light in the actual room.
Track every selection
Keep model numbers, sizes, finish names, lead times, and who supplies each item in one schedule. Replace vague labels such as “standard faucet” with a defined product.
Bring this into the planning conversation
Make a selection sheet with item, manufacturer, model, finish, dimensions, supplier, order date, and the person approving it. Photograph actual samples together in the room. When an item changes, review what it touches: a deeper sink may change a cabinet, a thicker floor may change a door, and a different light may shift electrical work.
