Measure the distance from door to grade, watch where the afternoon sun lands, and decide whether dining, steps, or accessible circulation are priorities. Check where water moves across the yard.
What the project may involve
A deck project may require foundation work, framing, ledger or freestanding design, decking, stairs, railings, and lighting coordination. Existing doors and siding affect the connection.
Decisions to make before construction
Choose a size and layout before comparing materials. Ask how drainage, structural connections, guard details, permit review, and maintenance will be addressed.
Prepare for a useful first meeting
Take measurements from the door to the yard and photograph the house wall where the deck might connect. Show where people will sit, eat, and descend to the lawn. Structure, water protection, stairs, and guards should be planned together. Finish boards are an important choice, but they cannot rescue an awkward layout.
