What to Keep During a Remodel
Keeping a sound feature can protect character and reduce unnecessary scope, but it needs an explicit decision.
Mark the keepers
Identify original doors, trim, floors, masonry, built-ins, or fixtures with personal or architectural value. Photograph them before work.
Check compatibility
A retained element may affect dimensions, finishes, code compliance, or the sequence of work. Discuss those constraints before ordering new materials.
Write protection into scope
Specify whether an item stays in place, is removed and stored, or is salvaged. Name who is responsible for damage and reinstallation.
Bring this into the planning conversation
Tag retained elements on the drawings and at the site before demolition. If a door or piece of trim will be removed, agree on labeling and storage. Matching an old profile later can be difficult, so photograph dimensions and adjacent details. Keep decisions should be made before the demolition crew is asked to move quickly.
