Planning a Deck Around Doors and Yard Use
A useful deck begins at the door and ends at the way people move into the yard.
Set the functions
Mark dining, seating, grill, steps, and paths. Use actual furniture sizes rather than only a target square footage.
Watch grade and sun
Door height, yard slope, privacy, and afternoon exposure can change the right shape and step location.
Test circulation
Leave a clear route around chairs and to the yard. A narrow deck may look large on a plan but feel crowded when furnished.
Bring this into the planning conversation
Cut cardboard to the size of the dining table and chairs, then set it outside near the door. Walk around it as if carrying a tray. If the grill is included, keep its location and clearances in the plan. Watch where rainwater travels from roof and yard, because the stair landing should stay usable after a storm.
